De Oesterij: taste Zeeland at the source
De Oesterij in Yerseke is an absolute must for foodies. These authentic oyster beds offer a unique insight into the world of shellfish, straight from the Oosterschelde. During a guided tour, you will learn more about traditional cultivation methods, and of course you can taste oysters on the spot – you won't find them fresher anywhere else.
A special addition is De Oester van de Chef: an initiative in which top chefs, including our own Jeroen Achtien, have created an oyster dish as they would serve it in their restaurant. Part of the proceeds from Jeroen's oyster will go to War Child.
Nature and peace at the Oosterschelde
Zeeland is known for its expansive landscapes, clean air and characteristic Zeeland light. This special light is created by salt crystals in the air and the reflection of sunlight on the water, which is then scattered again by the clouds.
Take a walk or bike ride along the Oosterschelde, where the tides constantly change the landscape. Birdwatchers, walkers and those seeking peace and quiet will find plenty to enjoy here. A guided boat trip – for example from Wemeldinge or Zierikzee – is also an option and offers a unique view of Zeeland's aquatic life.
Art, culture and history
The rich history of Zeeland comes to life in towns such as Middelburg, Veere and Zierikzee. Visit the Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg, located in a former abbey complex, or wander through the old streets of Veere, once an important trading town with Scottish influences. Domburg is also highly recommended: a place where artists such as Mondriaan and Toorop were inspired by the light and the sea. Today, you will still find galleries and studios where contemporary artists display their work.
