Everything you need to know about the design of Inter Scaldes
Inter Scaldes is Latin for "amidst the Scheldt rivers" and for 55 years the name of the recently reopened star restaurant in Zeeland.
The location and its rich surroundings were not only used for the name and menu, they were a great inspiration for the interior as well.
“The guest finds himself, as the name of this restaurant suggests, amidst the Scheldt rivers.” It are the words of interior designer Paul Linse of Studio Linse. After Rijks, Royal Opera House London and Pillows Hotel Maurits at the Park, he signed up for the Inter Scaldes project as well.
At the drawingboard with Paul Linse
The acclaimed Michelin-starred restaurant was welcomed into the Pillows Hotels Collection in January 2023. The historic building has been renovated with care and great attention to detail. The new co-owners, Jeroen and Sanne Achtien, sat down at the drawing board with Paul Linse. Together, they searched for the hidden treasures of its surroundings, paying attention to every detail. “From the versatile colour palette to the lush forms of the natural environment, everything has been carefully considered to capture the feeling of Zeeland, visible from the initial sketches to the final interior,” says Paul Linse.
Organic shapes and topographic elements
“The foundation of the interior are the velvety soft blue sofas, inspired by the waving shape of the Scheldt rivers. The sofa has curves where guests can enjoy a culinary evening in a private setting.” The shades, or “neutral tones,” as Paul Linse calls them, are vibrant but effortlessly blend into the natural surroundings. Wooden elements and ‘cuddly’ materials make the restaurant warm and intimate, while the glass facade creates a playful indoor-outdoor feel. Guests have a view of the organic herb garden that changes with the seasons.
A connection between the chef and guest
The interior highlights the interaction between the chef and the guest. The culinary journey, through both the menu and the space, begins in the lounge. Here, guests enjoy an aperitif while the chef prepares a number of appetizers at the marble bar. “Various intimate seating areas and a ceiling of mirrored glass create a playful effect in the lounge,” Paul Linse explains. The second encounter between chef and guest takes place in the kitchen, where an appetizer is prepared and explained. The guest then takes a seat in the restaurant, where the interior, menu, and surroundings harmoniously come together. Ultimately, it all ends where it began, in the lounge, where a selection of homemade treats is served, and the chef bids farewell to his guests.
